Project Development and Construction Updates
Alberta Infrastructure posted the tender for qualification of bidders for construction of St. Kateri Tekakwitha (K-6) on the Alberta Purchasing Connection (APC) website, with a closing date of June 15, 2018. The new building construction project will include landscaping, site works and solar panel installation. The project shall attain LEED Silver Certification.
The District continues to work with Alberta Infrastructure and is expecting to issue a construction tender soon.
The deep underground services and some of the curb work was completed along with the sub-base of the road. The construction tender is anticipated to be issued in January 2018.
Construction Update: The earthwork is proceeding as planned to bring the site to grade. In addition, underground servicing is in progress which includes: power, water, sewer/sanitation and the storm system. Servicing must be in place prior to road construction to provide access to the site. Alberta Infrastructure will be in a position to release the tender for construction once the road is complete. It is anticipated this will take place as early as December. All site readiness and construction progress is subject to weather conditions.
The Board of Trustees approved Guiding Principles that will inform decisions on boundaries and programming for the school. A full consultation process will begin in the Fall 2017 that will provide families, staff, and the broader public with an opportunity to learn about the school and provide input on the school attendance area and programs.
The movement of earth on the Westwinds site is currently underway to begin the work of servicing the site. Watch for future updates on construction.
Alberta Infrastructure is prepared to issue a tender for construction on the project once the land title is transferred to the Town of Morinville and road access to the site is available. The Town and the developer of the Westwinds site, Landrex are in discussions to make the site ready for construction.
The District and architects are working on the final plans and design of the school; plans are ahead of schedule. It is anticipated the school opening will be in 2019 and that public consultation around attendance area and programming for the school will begin this fall.
The project will now include the addition of solar panels, a government funded initiative to demonstrate leadership on climate change. To accommodate the addition of solar panels, modifications to the initial design will be made.
The construction project is in its final phase of site development. The design phase is now completed and the District has completed all of its required work. Once the road and access to the site is completed by the developer and/or the Town of Morinville, title for the property will shift from the developer to the Town, and tendering for the project will commence. It is anticipated that this Alberta Infrastructure managed project will be tendered by the Government of Alberta in the Spring of 2017. Please check back for future updates.
St. Kateri Tekakwitha Academy is expected to open its doors in 2018. At this time, architects have developed conceptual drawings and are working towards detailed plans for the school building and site.
