Vital Justin Grandin
Vital Justin Grandin, Roman Catholic Bishop of St. Albert, 1871-1902, born February 8, 1829 at St. Pierre Sur Orthe, France, died at St. Albert, Alberta, June 3, 1902. Educated at Le Mans, entered the Oblate Order in 1851 and was sent to Canada after his ordination in 1854. He served in the Canadian Northwest at Indian missions at Lake Athabasca and Ile a la Crosse. In 1857, he was appointed a titular bishop and coadjutor to the bishop of St. Boniface. On the creation of the diocese of St. Albert in 1871 he became its first Bishop. He made strenuous efforts to prevent the outbreak of the Northwest Rebellion, influencing the Metis in favor of peace and warning the Canadian Government of their growing discontent. At the end of hostilities he made an unsuccessful attempt to save Louis Riel. 1838 - Opting of the Beatification process on the Roman Level.
