Staff with the Musée Héritage visited École Secondaire Sainte Marguerite d’Youville (ESSMY) to teach Grade 7 students about the rich Métis culture in St. Albert and Alberta. As they were about to begin their presentation, an unexpected visitor stopped by the school and asked if she could stay for the presentation and learn along with our students. The surprise visitor was none other than Phyllis Webstad, author of the children’s book, “The Orange Shirt Story”, and the person responsible for the movement to establish Orange Shirt Day that we honour every September 30. Phyllis Webstad was in St. Albert for her book tour and had been driving by the school when she noticed that the sign was advertising “Orange Shirt Day” and decided to stop and visit the school. Her presence felt like a miracle and certainly made the day more meaningful to our students and staff.
