Morgan Brophy is a grade 11 student attending Morinville Community High School. Morgan believes the first step to reconciliation is to bring awareness of the past and to celebrate the beauty of First Nations culture so that it has meaning, respect, and reverence. If not, she says, “We run the risk of history repeating itself”. To fulfill her part, Morgan wrote a letter to all Indigenous students in the school and formed an Indigenous Council committed to honoring Treaty 6. Part of their work involves creating Indigenous displays, reading land acknowledgements during school celebrations, teaching students the history and story behind Orange Shirt Day, and supporting teachers with the implementation of First Nations perspectives across disciplines.
