School of Business

Earn University Credits in High School

Greater St. Albert Catholic Schools has partnered with MacEwan University to deliver university-level business courses to qualified students at our three senior high schools. Students partaking in the GSACRD International School of Business program will earn both high school and university credits at the same time, allowing them to finish high school and get a head start on university. Students who have completed English 30-1 and Math 30-1 or 30-2 will have the opportunity to take the following courses:

BUSN 201 - Introduction to Canadian Business (3 credits) - Now offered

This is an interdisciplinary course based on the premise that managerial decision-making requires an understanding of business as well as related fields in the humanities and the social sciences. The course covers three major themes: innovation and entrepreneurship, complex interactions/complex organizations and the national/international business environment.

ORGA 201 - Introduction to Management (3 credits) - In Progress

This course focuses on the nature and structure of work organizations and how people function in these environments. Topics include decision-making, planning, organizing, controlling, leadership, organizational design and structure, communication, teams, motivation, conflict, change and strategy.

LEGL 210 - Business Law I (3 credits) - In Progress

Students are introduced to the Canadian legal system and substantive areas of law that are of special interest to the business student. Topics of study include tort, contract, business ethics, agency, partnership and corporations. The student acquires a general knowledge of some of the basic principles of business law and is able to apply them to everyday business situations.

These courses can be applied to a variety of university faculties, including MacEwan’s Asia-Pacific Management Diploma or Bachelor of Commerce Degree, and are a great way to transition from high school to the demanding world of post secondary schooling.   MacEwan instructors will teach these courses on-site in St. Albert at St. Albert Catholic High School (SACHS), École Secondaire St. Marguerite d’Youville (ESSMY) or in Morinville at Morinville Community High School (MCHS). Course fees will be for materials (e.g. textbooks) only. MacEwan will also provide opportunities for the high school students to participate in relevant MacEwan activities like the Student Business Conference, guest speakers, career fairs, student for a day and other enriching experiences. Students starting grades 9 to 12 in September of 2013 can take advantage of these new course offerings. Enrolment is limited.
