Greater St. Albert Catholic Schools is committed to being transparent and responsible stewards of the resources entrusted to us. At the March 2024 Regular Board Meeting, the Board of Trustees directed Administration to begin the disposition process for the property located at 15 Mission Avenue, the former site of École Father Jan School.
This decision is guided by Board Policy 22: Surplus Lands and Buildings and provincial legislation under the Real Property Governance Act (RPGA), which requires school divisions to sell lands that are no longer needed for educational purposes. Importantly, the Minister of Infrastructure has formally reviewed the property, declined to acquire it, and granted permission for the Division to proceed with the sale.
The land at 15 Mission Avenue was originally purchased by the Board with money intended for Catholic education. As such, we are obligated to ensure that any proceeds from a sale are maximized and reinvested directly into capital projects that improve learning environments for students across the Division. It is the Board of Trustees’ responsibility to ensure the best possible use of public funds for present and future generations of students.
While École Father Jan School is no longer operating at this location, our decision to proceed with the disposition of the land ensures responsible stewardship of our capital and financial assets.
