On September 9, 2025, Greater St. Albert Catholic Schools was honoured to host a Treaty 6 and Métis Flag-Raising Ceremony at the Division Services Centre. The ceremony brought together Elders, First Nations and Métis community leaders, drummers/singers, and staff to mark an important step in our division’s ongoing journey of truth and reconciliation.
The raising of the Treaty 6 and Métis flags is more than a symbolic act. These flags will now stand proudly at the Division Services Centre, serving as daily reminders of the presence, history, and contributions of First Nations and Métis Peoples. They also call us to our responsibility to continue learning and listening, ensuring that the voices and experiences of Indigenous and Métis communities are honoured in our schools and our division.
Most importantly, the flags reflect our commitment to building relationships founded on respect, understanding, and hope as we walk together on the journey of truth and reconciliation.
We are especially grateful to Elder Norma Spicer, Elder Andy Auigbelle, the Alexander Singers, representatives from Alexander First Nation, the Otipemisiwak Métis Government, the St. Albert Métis District, and our local leaders for joining us and sharing their wisdom, music, and teachings.
Following the ceremony, guests were treated to music by Métis fiddler Zach Willier, whose performance celebrated the joy, resilience, and strength of culture and community.
This day will be remembered as a milestone in our division’s history, and we look forward to the continued journey of reconciliation together with our partners, staff, students, and families.
